Celebrating Kwanzaa
The PSI People of Color Coalition (POCC) Committee is committed to promoting diversity and acceptance of People of Color within the organization through education and by sharing our experiences with our peers. As a result, we would like to take this opportunity to share the history of Kwanzaa.
Kwanzaa is an African American and pan-African holiday that celebrates family, community, and culture. Created in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga, a professor of African Studies, Kwanzaa is a seven-day (December 26–January 1) cultural festival that joins communitarian values and practices of Continental African American culture. Participants celebrate with feasts (Karamu), music, dance, poetry, narratives and end the holiday with a day dedicated to reflection and recommitment to the Seven Principles of Kwanzaa.
