José M. — Feeling Blessed
José M. came to the United States from Brazil many years ago. “I came here to make a better life for myself,” José says. He worked construction for many years and lived a simple life: “It was hard work. I’d go to my job, come back home, and then go to work again.”
When the Covid pandemic hit, the construction company closed, and José found himself out of work. Unable to pay his rent, he became homeless and went to the Men’s Inn at Pine Street. José was eager to find permanent housing and worked with his case manager to find an apartment.
“The staff at Pine Street’s shelter were wonderful, and they helped me find a place to live,” says Jose.
José has lived in a Pine Street’s supportive housing location in Dorchester for more than a year. “I love it here and I feel blessed,” says José. “It’s safe and clean, and the staff is very responsive to tenants’ needs. If you want to talk to someone you just knock on their door.”
“I love Pine Street Inn,” he concludes. “It’s a place where people can get a second chance.”
