City of Boston Releases Latest Homeless Census
Mayor Martin Walsh recently released the results of the city of Boston’s latest homeless census, conducted in December 2013.
Key Findings:
-
The total number of individual homeless adults increased 3.3% from 3,597 last year to 3,714 this year.
-
The number of adults in emergency shelter was up 10.5% from 1,367 last year to 1,511 this year.
-
The number of homeless individuals living on the streets was 180, a decrease of 6.7% percent over the total of 193 the prior year.
Pine Street Inn is disappointed that, for the second year in a row, the numbers for individuals have increased. For six prior years, we saw steady decreases – close to 30 percent. The reduction in homelessness had been due to the exceptional collaboration among numerous city and nonprofit agencies.
We continue our work to move more people out of shelter and into housing, with the goal of increasing the supply of affordable housing with support services, and making shelter stays as short as possible.
Pine Street Inn looks forward to working with Mayor Walsh and his administration to reduce homelessness in Boston.
